In the small village of Radeln in Transylvania, the Peter Maffay foundation is planning to create another holiday home for traumatized children, along the lines of the finca Ca’n Llompart on Mallorca. For this purpose, the Peter Maffay Foundation has bought an old vicarage and its adjoining buildings, which are now to be renovated. In the vicinity of these buildings, there is a century-old, heritage-protected fortress. Within these walls, the Transylvanian Saxons found shelter in the 12th and 13th century, when attacked by Tartars or Ottomans. The Transylvanian Saxons, who originated from Germany, had been hired by the Hungarian rulers to secure the frontiers in the east. There are still some 150 fortresses, but many of them in a lamentable state. When Peter Maffay visited his homeland after more than 40 years, he thought it would be a good idea to build a home for children where people had found shelter and care a long time ago. Up to 14 children from difficult backgrounds and their supervisors can spend ten to fourteen days in the fortress. The reconstruction will be completed by autumn 2010 at the earliest, so that the first children may then be invited to the vicarage. The holiday home is intended as an international place of encounters and also a kind of exchange center: apart from Romanian children, foreign groups are also to be received. |
